The video i have chosen is from the 2008 presidential elections and is a campaign advertisement for the democrat Barack Obama. The video is promoting people to vote for Obama by using his credentials as a voting tool. For example the video talks about Obama educational achievements after finishing university and also mentions that he was 'the first black elected to head Harvards law review. The video mentions that Obama could 'have cashed in' after his time at university and he could have done so much with the talent he had, yet he chose to help the people of America and make a change. I think this is significant as the campaign is getting the American public to believe that this man could have used his talents in so many ways to make himself rich yet he chose to help other people - it is getting people to see him in a positive heroic light.
The video mentions that he "fought for change" and worked to rebuild certain areas of the USA that were damaged by plant closes. It gets influential people within the academic world such as Professor Laurence Tribe at Harvard Law to talk about how outstanding Obama was a man and a leader. It discusses how in states such as Illinois, he brought republicans and democrats together for the first time in areas such as; cutting taxes for workers or bringing expanded healthcare to children. What i also found interesting was the fact that the video gets a republican Senator Kirk Dillard to talk about how he worked on some of the deepest issues such as arms control and ethics reform. This advertising of the opposing party talking about him in a positive light would have spurred people who voted republican to think again about their choice- a good advertising strategy. The video ends on the message "there is not a liberal America, or a conservative America but a United States of America". This slogan reminds everyone that the USA is one, and brings together the idea of unity and patriotism.
