This is a lithograph by Currier and Ives that is based off a painting done in 1856 by A.F. Tait. The picture is set in open grass lands presumably in the west. It depicts a Native American fleeing from an American holding a gun. The Native American is falling off his horse so the American probably shot him. In the background you can see another American chasing a group of Native Americans away and holding a gun.
This is showing how the Americans were expanding and making the Native Americans leave their homes. It shows Manifest Destiny because the Americans thought it was their god given right to expand west and explore the new lands they acquired, even if it meant making the native people who already lived there leave their homes behind. The Americans did not care. They just wanted to make lands theirs for the rich white man.
The Americans made the Native Americans leave their home lands, but they also tried to Americanise the Native Americans by making them adopt their culture. That can kind of be seen in this picture since the Native Americans did not have horses before the English settled in American, but now the Native Americans are riding horses. They needed to try and adopt some aspects of American culture so they could have some what of a fighting chance to stay where they lived. This is why they had to learn to use horses. In the end though the Americans came in and still forced the Native Americans out until they had to live one special reservations.
